Appalachian Bronzeback Adventures has many float options to choose from. Fisherman can bring their own equipment if they wish to do so, but is not necessary. On the James River, we offer five different trips beginning on up river of Buchanan and running all the way to Cashaw Dam covering 30 miles of river, and one trip on the lower section of the Maury River. With multiple rafts they can accomate groups of upto 4 guests at a time.
Fishing Trip Summary
Trip # 1 – James River - Narrow Passage to Buchanan float. This is a great float anytime of the year, but especially good in the spring and the fall when the water is cold. There aren't many large rapids on this float and there is a great deal of slower, deeper pools that hold good fish. This stretch is also the best stretch of the James we fish that holds a good number of Muskies.
Trip # 2 – James River - Buchanan to Arcadia float. This float is easily accessible as it's within 5 minutes of I-81 and Twin River Outfitters. This float has several inside and outside bends that are very popular for Smallmouth Bass.
Trip # 3 - James River - Arcadia to Alpine float. This is one of the most scenic floats punctuated by Rocky Point which is a rock formation that juts out from the landscape. It's not unusual to see Bald Eagles in this area. This stretch of the James has the potential for big Smallmouth Bass due to the many deep ledges on this float.
Trip # 4 – James River - Alpine to Natural Bridge float. This is our most popular float due to the big numbers of fish that can be caught on this stretch of water. The Alpine float has a bit of everything, deep pools and lots of rapids and eddies that hold a good number of fish.
Trip # 5 – James River - Balcony Falls float. Our favorite overall float. This stretch of water flaunts Balcony Falls which is a class III rapid that holds big fish and numbers of fish as well. The scenery and fishing is spectacular on this float due to the fact that much of this stretch is very remote and uninhabited.
Trip # 6 – Maury River – Lower 6 miles. This Maury River trip begins on the downstream side of Glen Maury Park and concludes at the confluence of the James and Maury Rivers. The Maury River has actually been rated higher than the New and James the last few years due to the number and size of fish. Many fishermen pass up the Maury because it appears to be too small to hold this number and size of fish. That can't be further from the truth as we catch many citation Smallmouth on the Maury River every year.
Trip # 7 – Maury River – Lexington to Route 60 - 7 miles. Last but certainly not least. This Maury River trip begins at Jordens Point Park and proceeds downstream towards Buena Vista. Trip is extremely scenic with the Chessie Nature Trail running along much of the right bank. The fishing along this section is impressive both in terms of numbers and size. This trip is typically only runnable in the spring when sufficient water levels exist to float this section by raft.
